For almost 20 years Jaybro Group has been offering traineeships and apprenticeships to youth in the community, providing young people with valuable opportunities to grow and develop their careers.

In that time, we’ve had the privilege of training and mentoring many talented, driven individuals, including Tim, who started as a trainee 19 years ago and is still with us today as a State Operations Manager. Our traineeship success stories show how dedication and hard work can lead to incredible career opportunities, taking our new joiners from entry-level trainees to leadership roles.

We caught up with Martin, Mya, James, Nathan, Jackson and Jesse, six former trainees/apprentices who are now full-time employees, to hear about their experiences and insights for those considering a traineeship or apprenticeship opportunity.

Martin

Martin - Mechanical Fitter, Specialised Force

After realising university wasn’t for him, Martin pursued a more practical career path. “I have always been a very hands-on person, and very much enjoyed fixing things and working on various types of mechanical equipment. This apprenticeship seemed like the perfect opportunity, and I very quickly discovered that this is what I want to do,” he shares.

Martin’s favourite projects so far has been maintaining DURAPAC Safe-D-Lock jacks, where he enjoyed problem-solving and learning new skills. “The most valuable thing I've learnt during my apprenticeship is that you should never pass up on an opportunity to learn something new, even if it seems a very daunting or difficult at first. Those opportunities might seem impossible at first, but they are what helped me grow and what helped me gain so much more experience and knowledge than I could have expected to in the last 3 and a half years.”

Mya - Warehouse Operator, Jaybro WA

Mya highlights the importance of researching qualifications and career opportunities, advising trainees to “complete certificates to back up your experience.” Mya explained that her Warehouse traineeship provided valuable hands-on experience in warehouse operations, teamwork, and time management, and learnt “vital skills in warehouse operations from the ground up.”

Jesse - Warehouse Operator, Jaybro VIC

If you're thinking about starting a traineeship, Jesse says, “Do it, it is an amazing opportunity with so much growth and even more to learn.” Jesse joined the team fresh out of high school, and his journey as a Warehouse Trainee was filled with valuable lessons and experiences to shape his development.  One of Jesse’s standout moments so far was leading the team MiniGame™ for Jaybro Victoria’s Altona and Laverton sites. “I was able to do something outside of my comfort zone and meet others from Jaybro around Australia,” he explains. This project allowed him to step up and take on leadership responsibilities, all while connecting with colleagues from across the country.

When asked about the most valuable lesson he learned through his Warehouse traineeship, Jesse says, “Confidence. I was nervous and shy when I first started, but with every week, I was able to grow more confident and I have gained a great group of friends.”

Nathan - IT Support Technician, Jaybro Group

Nathan values the confidence and hands-on learning his Information Technology traineeship provided. “It has helped me develop a structured approach to work and gain invaluable experience,” he says. His advice? “Take every opportunity to grow and challenge yourself.”

Jackson - Warehouse Operator, Jaybro NSW

Jackson found inspiration from his school’s career advisor and an industry immersion day, leading him to start a school-based Warehouse traineeship. Balancing work and study, he later transitioned to a full-time trainee role, fast-tracking his qualifications and career. “I really enjoyed my work experience and placement week, which motivated me to pursue this career.” Jackson shares that his most valuable lesson was gaining knowledge while completing college work, which strengthened his practical skills.

One of Jackson’s favourite projects was participating in the Great Game of Business MiniGames™ initiative, where he helped lead the team to achieve better results and milestones. “It was a fun experience to track and share data during meetings and contribute toward team goals.” His advice? “A traineeship is a great way to learn skills for your dream career while gaining experience and contributing to real projects.”

James - Warehouse Operator, Jaybro WA

James shared that his previous job experience as an assistant warehouse manager was his driving factor to pursue higher heights in logistics, and recommends balancing education and practical experience for the best opportunities.

When asked about his favourite projects, James shared that the Jaybro warehouse relocation from Welshpool to Canning Vale was an “amazing experience” and that “being depended on and helping organise whilst learning new skills has been a great valuable experience.”

At Jaybro Group, we see training and development as a key part of empowering our team, and we are proud to have extended this opportunity to our community through our traineeship and apprenticeship programs. Supporting and mentoring talented young people is incredibly rewarding, giving them the chance to build real-world skills and kick-start their careers.
A huge thank you to our team members who have taken these trainees under their wing, providing guidance and support to foster their development. We are proud of their success and growth and look forward to seeing what they achieve in the future.
